My Everchanging Garden

Gardening That Grows With Me

Spiraea x cinerea ‘Grefsheim’ (Spirea)

Height: 1.2 m (4 – 5 feet)
Spread: 1.2 m (4 – 5 feet )
Bloom: small white, early spring, long lasting
Foliage: green, on arching branches

Pluses: blooms early and very reliable

Also known as white spirea, Grefsheim is an early spring blooming variety. White blooms appear early, before the foliage has completely leafed out and are slightly fragrant. Grefsheim has a very dense habit with long arching branches. If you would like to have a bridlewreath spirea but do not have the room consider Grefsheim.

I use this shrub to hide our well and only prune back every few years. It is an easy, no care shrub that needs little pruning. Overpruning will result in the loss of the nice arching branching. When you prune, reach in and prune out older branches at ground level.

Garden Location: East Garden. Grefsheim works well in the front yard as it blooms early and is great as a foundation or cover plant as it’s size is not overwhelming.
