My Everchanging Garden

Gardening That Grows With Me

Holiday Planters

It’s that time of year again to decorate my front urns for the holidays. I am fortunate to be able to obtain all the red and yellow twigged dogwood that I need from my gardens but most of my evergreens are not yet large enough to start clipping away large pieces. So I start with low priced grocery store containers and supplement from there. I have reused the same bows and large sugar pine cones for the past three years. I remove the pine cones each spring and store them in the garage in a large plastic bin that has holes for air circulation and no top. So far they look almost as good as the first year I purchased them.

Cutting back some overgrown cotoneaser provided some nice contrast along with a few twigs of holly and some threadleaf Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sungold’.

I can however wait a while for a light dusting of snow which would make them look even more festive.
