“A rich, almost brownie like, chocolate cake with milk chocolate icing. This is a family favourite. For years I told everyone this was a family recipe only to find out from my mom she got the recipe from a friend down the street! Well, it’s a family recipe for two generations anyway.”
INGREDIENTS
- CAKE
- 2 cups flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup margarine or butter
- 1 cup water
- 3 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
- 1/2 cup sour milk (add 1 teaspoon vinegar to milk)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs beaten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ICING
- 1/4 cup milk
- 3 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
- 1/2 cup margarine
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 pound icing sugar
DIRECTIONS
- Preheat oven to 375F. Use ungreased cookie sheet.
- Mix flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
- Cook margarine, water and cocoa over low heat until melted and combined.
- Pour over dry ingredients. Beat for 1 minute.
- Add sour milk, eggs and vanilla. Beat for 3 minutes.
- Spread evenly on cookie sheet.
- Bake for 25 minutes.Frosting
- Melt over low heat, margarine and cocoa. Add milk.
- Remove from heat and add vanilla. Add icing sugar a little at a time, stirring vigorously, until desired thickness (thick but spreadable).
- Pour and spread over cooled cake.
Yield: 24-28 pieces
