First Peas

We enjoyed some early snow peas with our dinner this evening. Unfortunately we were not able to have any fresh pod peas. Despite surrounding the peas with 1/4 inch fencing and a mesh cover the chipmunks still managed to get inside and devour our first peas. It is amazing that they open the pea pod, eat out the ripe peas and leave the opened shells all over the ground. That makes two years in a row we have not been able to enjoy regular pod peas. Typically they do not eat the snow peas since I guess they really like the large ripe peas inside the pod. Since the sugar snap peas were not quite ripe I decided to change tactics and completely covered the row of sugar snap peas with flexible netting. We will see how that works.
